When I saw this illustration I knew this is the look I wanted for this page with the ghost explorer, in human form, falling into the sea. The difficulty with this image was to show he's just fallen into the sea with the use of bubbles.
Looking at reference images of people diving into water helped to work out where the bubbles would look like and what area of the body would cause the most amount of friction therefore the most amount of bubbles.
But the white I put behind the bubbles was too solid so I then was shown how to soften it to make it look more natural, which worked a lot more.
Also another way I thought of showing that he's just fallen into the sea was to drawn horizontal lines slowly getting closer together as you go down the page going into black.

Page 1
For this page I just wanted to make a pattern that would show a storm/ tempest. I wanted to make a beginning like in Shakespeare's Tempest. I remember seeing this video when I was younger and the images and the name have stuck with me since, especially the scene with the actual storm.
In the end I illustrated many wild waves all crashing in multiple directions. I then decided i'd see how my black and white image would look with a colour dropped in. Though in the end of the process I was thinking about making the book greyscale and printing it on hand made paper to make it look like an old antique book.
The colour I chose ended up working though the black line didn't show through clearly when I turned it greyscale so I made the line white to show all the 'white horses'.

Tom Gauld-
I like that in this image the ghosts are just simple human shapes. Also Gauld's cross hatching style is really atmospheric.
